My son has been playing SYL basketball for several years now, and until recently, we’ve had a great experience. The staff has always been supportive, and the environment has felt fair and positive. Unfortunately, this season has brought growing concerns that I feel need to be addressed. There is an all-girls team participating in the co-ed league, and let me be clear—these girls are incredibly talented. They play at a much higher level than most of the teams in this league, and it's been impressive to watch. Because of that, it’s disheartening to see them being given what appears to be unfair advantages they simply don’t need. Throughout the season, we’ve witnessed inconsistent officiating—refs calling fouls on the boys for plays they allow the girls to get away with, including missed illegal screens and generous free throw opportunities. What’s even more concerning is the playoff bracket, which has now been set up in a way that gives this team a distinct edge. While other teams are expected to play back-to-back games and face fatigue, the girls’ team enters their matchups well-rested, putting them at an unfair advantage. Coaches have already brought these concerns to the staff, only to be told that the schedule will not be changed. This lack of consideration undermines the integrity of the game and sends the wrong message to all the kids involved. These girls are more than capable of winning on their own merit. They don’t need extra help—they need a fair playing field. If they’re going to compete in a co-ed league, then the rules, the refereeing, and the schedule should reflect that. If not, then perhaps it’s time to consider a dedicated all-girls SYL league where they can thrive and be appropriately matched.

a good community center. it gets busy real quick with kids after school hours. i would recommend coming right when they open or a few hours before they close.
